If you were to see it on a map, Sri Lanka would look rather tiny. However, this small island has quite a bit to offer in terms of culture, wildlife, natural beauty, and more. This is why many visitors often find that they have to narrow down what they would like to do beforehand.
If you are touring Sri Lanka, then there a few spots that you simply have to see. These either hold special meaning or are sights that you are unlikely to see in other parts of the world. Here are the top places that you should consider visiting:
Although there are many mountain tops on the island, this is one of the most notable. This is one of the few places in the country that has significance to three major religions. Buddhists believe that it is an imprint of the foot of the Lord Buddha. Hindus maintains that the footprint is that of the Lord Shiva. Christians are of the belief that it was made by Adam as he was cast out of paradise. Regardless of what you choose to believe, there is no denying that Adam’s Peak offers up some of the most beautiful sunrises in the country.
Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage
If you stay long enough in Sri Lanka, you are sure to see an elephant or two. However, if you want to see an entire hoard, head to Pinnawela where orphaned baby and adults live. There is nothing quite so wonderful as the sight of these majestic creatures bathing in the river and playing with one another. If you visit at the right time, you may even be able to see the calves being bottle fed. This is certainly not something that you will get to see in many other places.
Dambulla Cave Temple
There is no shortage of Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka. One that really stands out, though, is the Dambulla cave temple. As the name suggests, much of the temple is within caves but it isn’t the only notable feature of this religious area. From frescoes to artwork and statues, there is so much beauty to admire here. If that wasn’t impressive enough, there are certain portions of the temple that is gilded as well.
Horton Plains National Park
If you are looking for gorgeous views and plenty of wildlife, then Horton Plains National Park is a good place to head to. Really, there is no lack of things to do here, regardless of what your interests are. If you are interested in natural landscapes then you will be astounded by the breath-taking waterfalls. In case you are not one to just sit around, then you will be delighted by all of the hiking trails. There is also quite a number of native animals that you can look around for and just as many plants as well.
These are just some of the must-see places on this gorgeous island but they should certainly be at the top of your list. After all, it can be argued that no visit to Sri Lanka is complete otherwise.
